Experiance the history of our company at each visit. Every day we try to successfully design the future based on the fundament of the past.

The origin of the name Greifenstein dates back some hundred years. The ancestral home Hof zum Greifen (Griffon's Court) or later named Schöneck(beautiful corner) or Greifenstein (Griffon's stone) has already been mentioned documentarily in 1367, a long time it was possessed by the beneficence Neumünster.

Since 1928, the family operated the company. The family acquired possession of the company in 1937. The Franconian Inn and Restaurant with some guest rooms was managed by the family Scheller. Already at that time Max Scheller as master butcher together with his wife Franziska pampered their guests with Franconian specialties.

After the bombing on March 16th in the year 1945 which destroyed large parts of Würzburg the family fled to relatives living in the rural area. It should take five years before they could go back to the city and dare a new start.

All the destruction of war had to be removed. Afterwards, together with their daughter Ingeborg Schraud and her husband, Adolf Schraud, the couple Scheller opened up the inn in a new guise. In the following years they could connect up to the success they had before the war. Max Scheller gave his knowledge as a butcher to his son in law, who subsequently to his captivity as a prisoner of war was working as a cook in France, New York and Alabama.

The older generation retired with the years from business life and left the field to the young ones. Benefiting from the boom of the 60s and 70s, the property was enlarged by two buildings. In 1962 the family bought the estate of the former inn Schwarzer Adler (black eagle), a new hotel building was constructed in 1966 at the marketplace and in 1971 in the Dettelbachergasse enlarging the house to 40 guest rooms.

Since 1987, the Greifensteiner Hof is a founding member of the Association of Würzburger Festival Hosters eV and looks back to more than 20 years of successful gastronomic events. Every year, we expect our guests at the Würzburger Weindorf and the Weinparade, which are two of the most well known wine partys in the franconian area.

In 1995, the next generation joined the company. Karin Korger born Schraud and her husband Siegfried Korger realised extensive renovations stylishly combining tradition and modernity.

In 2006 another big step had been done. The family bought the neighboring estates of the hotel Goldener Hahn (Golden Rooster) and the franconian restaurant Marienplatz. The objects were elaborately transformed and now home 9 new suites and junior suites the modern restaurant Marienplatz and the cocktail bar Markt7.

Due to great demand, in 2007, the company Greifenstein Events & Catering was founded. Since this time you can profit from our services anywhere where you need them.
